Finding the right enrichment programme for a child with special needs can feel overwhelming. There are many options in Singapore, and each promises to help your child grow. Here is a practical way to narrow the field and choose with confidence.
Start with your child, not the programme
Before comparing centres, write down what your child actually needs right now. Is it help with communication and daily routines? Academic support? A calmer social setting? Confidence and independence? A good programme should be able to explain how it will support your child's specific goals and not just describe its general activities.
Ask about class size
Class size matters more than almost anything else. In a large group, a child who learns differently can easily get lost or overwhelmed. Small groups allow the educator to notice how each child is doing, adapt on the spot, and keep the environment calm.
Ask directly: How many children are in a class, and what is the adult-to-child ratio?
Check the educator's qualifications
There is a real difference between a general tutor and a trained special needs educator. Look for recognised qualifications. For example, a DISE (Diploma in Special Education) earned through Singapore's National Institute of Education (NIE). A qualified SPED educator is trained specifically in how children with special needs learn.
Visit the environment
A child's surroundings shape how safe and settled they feel. Some children find large, busy, clinical centres overwhelming, and do far better in a warm, home-based setting. If you can, visit or ask to see photos and videos *while picturing your child in that space.
Trust the "fit" test
Finally, notice how the centre talks to you. Do they ask thoughtful questions about your child? Are they honest about whether they are the right fit? A programme that is willing to say "we may not be the best match for this need" is one you can trust.

- Is the educator a qualified SPED professional?
- Does the environment feel calm and welcoming?
- Do they ask about your child and give honest answers?
